Mohujos Mexican Restaurant began its journey in September 2006 as the brainchild of Wendy and sister in law Helen. Both being long time fans of Mexican food noticed that there were no really good fresh Mexican eateries outside of the big cities and after extensive market research it became apparent that Mexican cuisine was going to be a growing trend over the next few years.
As a former Manager for Churchill Insurance Wendy has travelled around the UK trying various restaurants and bars and wanted to bring to Teesside something fresh, new and exciting. With no previous experience in the food industry and lots of enthusiasm Mohujos Billingham eventually opened its doors in February 2007.
Originally a family run restaurant Wendy took over the business alone in October 2008 and with the help of Head chef Andrew Laverick, known by the nickname Lav since an early age, created what is now a firmly established and well known busy restaurant in Billingham, offering a relaxed and intimate venue with traditional decor with an often said holiday feel about it.
Along the way Mohujos has taken part in the final four times for the local world Parmo competition, winning the much talked about trophy in 2013. Some may argue the Mohujos Mexican Parmo isn’t a true Parmo given that we have replaced the traditional béchamel sauce with our own homemade enchiladas sauce, and using the delicious Monterrey Jack cheese instead of cheddar gives it a tasty Mexican twist. The Mohujos version has now become a firm favourite of local customers and is by far the best selling dish on the menu.
Another award to be extremely proud of is that for two years running Mohujos Billingham has been awarded a certificate of excellence from the review site Trip Advisor due to excellent on-going feedback and currently holds the number one spot in Billingham.
Our menu is prepared fresh to order using local suppliers where possible and is a blend of traditional Mexican cuisine with South American. Most dishes are prepared for a milder palate however, we are more than happy to prepare meals to taste for those wanting a bit more bite! The most popular dishes such as taquitos, stuffed jalapeños, pulled pork enchiladas and burritos have become hugely popular, plus the customer favourites such as chorizo and black pudding, jambalaya and tequila cream chicken are often requested. Given that meals are prepared to order we don’t consider ourselves to be fast food and during really busy periods you may have to wait a while but it will be worth it!
